History tells us that the batsmen found it tough to bat in the English conditions. It is because the English seamers have been smart enough to keep the batters in check in the initial stages of the game. In the process, the bowlers would get the better of the batters, more often than not.
As a result, piling up plenty of runs in the English conditions is not that easy. Case in point, let’s take a look at the four wicketkeepers who scored the most runs in a single Test match in England.
1. Rishabh Pant
India’s young and dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman, Rishabh Pant has been a phenomenal performer for the team when it comes to the longest format of the game. It is worth mentioning here that he is the first-ever visiting wicketkeeper to score more than 200 runs in a Test match in England.
Rishabh Pant scored 203 runs against England in the fifth and rescheduled Test in 2022. He scored 146 in the first innings and followed it up with 57 in the second innings.

2. Clyde Walcott
Former West Indies cricketer Clyde Walcott played Test cricket from 1948 to 1960. In these twelve years, he scored 3798 runs at a spectacular batting average of 56.7 including 15 centuries, 14 fifties and 1 double century. He comes second on the list as he scored 182 runs in a Test against England in 1950.
3. Adam Gilchrist
Adam Gilchrist is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest wicketkeeper-batsmen of all time. He was best known for his ability to play counterattacking innings, which was always his style. Adam Gilchrist scored 152 runs against England in 2001, the third-most by a visiting wicketkeeper in English conditions. Gilchrist scored 152 runs in the first innings including 20 fours and 5 sixes.
4. MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni might not have scored an overseas Test century but he is the most successful captain in the history of Indian cricket with three different ICC titles. Even as a batter, he always tried to give absolutely everything to the team and he never believed in individual records. MS Dhoni scored 151 runs (77 in the first innings, 74 in the second innings) in a Test match against England in 2011.
#OnThisDay last year, Rishabh pant became 1st ever visiting WK to score 200+ runs in a Test in England.
