England’s batting great and former Test captain, Alastair Cook made the headlines after he announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket. He has completed the glorious chapter of his cricketing career and during his playing days, he made waves as a batsman and captain.
England national cricket team immensely benefitted from the veteran’s services. In a touching statement shared on the Essex website, the former England Test captain went emotional about his retirement. He further recalled his cricketing venture which spanned over two decades.
While he was a decent batsman for England in One-Day Internationals, he has been one of the best Test batters during his era. The Gloucester-born aggregated 12,472 runs at a batting average of 45.4 including 33 centuries, five double centuries and 57 fifties. He registered his personal best score of 294.

“Today I am announcing my retirement and the end of my career as a professional cricketer. It is not easy to say goodbye. For more than two decades, cricket has been so much more than my job. It has allowed me to experience places I never dreamed I would go, be part of teams that have achieved things I would never have thought possible and, most importantly, create deep friendships that will last a lifetime,” Alastair Cook said in a statement on the Essex website.
For the record, Alastair Cook scored over 26,000 first-class runs. Notably, 11,337 runs came for the Essex cricket team. As far as his ODI record is concerned, he scored 3204 runs in 92 Tests including five centuries and 19 fifties, registering his personal best score of 137. He played only 4 T20Is in his career, scoring 61 runs.
