Umran Malik has been a major driving force in the Indian bowling echelons and continues to deliver phenomenally with his high speeds. He claimed another brace in India’s last fixture against New Zealand making him a priceless asset in the Indian ranks.
This is just the beginning for the youngster and he has a long way to go. However, the fact that he has found himself amidst some serious wicket-taking form will be spurring the Indian hopes in the forthcoming days. He has previously received plaudits from the likes of seasoned campaigners in the craft of fast bowling. The latest addition to his long list of admirers was none other than former Indian cricketer, Ravi Shastri.
During his commentary stint in India’s series decider against New Zealand, Shastri said, “I think he plays an opportunity more in 50-over cricket than in T20s. And with the amount of cricket that is being played, he will always be in the mix because there could be injuries cropping up and any time. There is a deadline to announce your side for the World Cup. The fitness of players will be the key. That’s why this IPL will be crucial to see how they (bowlers) take the load.”
Talking on the overall bowling strength of the Indian unit for the upcoming World Cup, Shastri added, “You would want Bumrah back, really because he is magical. He is a star. Him back in the side fully-fit will really lift this Indian team. And Hardik is such a key component. Him bowling for India makes this team a different side. India have got a great record at home. The boys are fit – Bumrah – it can make a big difference. You’ve got variety in Arshdeep as well, Kuldeep and Chahal have bowled well. Washington Sundar is threatening all the time so it’s a good bunch.”
India’s next challenge will be up against Australia in a four-match Test series that will determine the fate of the upcoming WTC final in June. If the Men in Blue make the cut for the finale, then they will need their full strength to battle in the final rounds.
