The Qualifier 2 match between the Gujarat Titans and the Mumbai Indians at Ahmedabad’s historic Narendra Modi Stadium will be remembered primarily for the timeless valour of Shubman Gill, but it also marked the third case of a player retiring in the history of the tournament and the IPL, respectively.
After Wriddhiman Saha was dismissed for an individual score of 18, Gujarat’s talented middle-order batter Sai Sudharshan, who has had a commendable run in the ongoing tournament, once again rose to the occasion and played the role of an anchor to Gill’s destructive knock.
Gill’s achievements were nicely balanced by Sudharsan’s effort, and he made sure that GT didn’t lose another wicket and give the initiative back to MI. Before Gill was caught by Akash Madhwal, the pair put up a score of 138 runs for the second wicket. After scoring 43 runs (without getting out) off of 31 balls, Rashid Khan came in to replace Sudharsan before the 20th over. After Ravichandran Ashwin and Atharva Taide, Sudharsan was the third and last player to retire from the IPL. He was the second player to retire this season and the first for Mumbai.
GT’s first innings ended with a staggering 233/3 thanks in large part to Rashid, who came in for the last over and smashed Chris Jordan right down the ground for a smashing boundary on the very first ball he played before scoring a single off the only other ball he played to stay undefeated on five.
