The Fifth Ashes Test between England and Australia hangs in the balance after an exciting battle for control on the second day at the Kennington Oval in London. Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja had no intention of scoring runs in the morning session before the tourists started to rise on the lead. Joe Root takes a brilliant catch at first slip of Labushen’s. Usman Khawaja, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh followed suit. Steve Smith survived a lucky runout and made a partnership with Pat Cummins of 54 runs. Australian captain made 49 runs with Todd Murphy and he made 34 runs to frustrate the England bowlers.
The second day ended with an excellent catch by Ben Stokes to take off Pat Cummins for 36 runs at the boundary. Australia all out for 295 runs and leading by 12 runs. At the end of the day, Steve Smith looked disappointed for not being able to convert 40-50 runs into 100.
Smith told:
“A lot of us got starts, the scorecards are very similar in a way, and we weren’t able to capitalize and [turn] one of those partnerships that were 40-50 into 100-150 and that gives us a decent lead. Bit disappointed from that aspect,”
Another interesting day is in store for the fans as the English team takes a big lead in the fourth innings at the Kennington Oval.
