The IPL 2024 Orange Cap has been taken back by Virat Kohli even though he didn’t do much with the bat in the 28-run loss of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s to Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday. Kohli, the star batsman of RCB, got dropped to second, allowing Riyan Parag of the Rajasthan Royals to take the Orange Cap with his unbeaten half-century against the Mumbai Indians in the IPL on Monday. He was back in pole position after scoring 22 runs off 16 balls and taking his overall run tally to 203 runs in the Orange Cap list of the IPL season 2024.
While Parag is in second place with his 181 runs, The star batsman of Sunrisers Hyderabad, Heinrich Klaasen, continues to be in third place. Also, Nicholas Pooran, with his unbeaten 40, is new No. 4 on the list, taking his run tally to 146 on the Orange Cap list. Quinton de Kock his teammate joined him after smashing a half-century in the last match. The skipper of the Punjab Kings, Shikhar Dhawan, has been pushed down to 6, whereas David Warner of the Delhi Capitals is at 7 in the Orange Cap standings for IPL 2024.
The Orange Cap of the IPL is given to the player who is the leading run scorer for the season and has shown some amazing batting skills. David Warner has won three orange caps, but the 2016 IPL of Virat Kohli holds a special place in history. Kohli amassed a staggering 973 runs, including a record-breaking four centuries, while winning the Orange Cap in that season.
As the IPL’s top scorer, a total of 13 players have etched their names. This prestigious list has the names of legends like Sachin Tendulkar and rising stars like Shubman Gill. In the inaugural season of the IPL in 2008, Shaun Marsh of the Punjab Kings became the first holder of the Orange Cap with a mammoth 616 runs, surpassing Gautam Gambhir and Sanath Jayasuriya. In the following year, Australian great Matthew Hayden won the Orange Cap with 572 runs in 12 matches.
The 2010 edition of the IPL witnessed batting icon Sachin Tendulkar from the Mumbai Indians reaching his peak with around 618 runs in 15 matches. The ‘Universe Boss’, Chris Gayle, won the orange cap in 2011. He dominated the Orange Cap race by scoring 608 runs in 12 matches for his franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore. Gayle become the first player to retain the Orange Cap by smashing 733 runs in 15 matches. The 2013 season saw another star from the Chennai Super Kings, Michael Hussey, dethrone Gayle. He scored 733 runs in 17 games while leading the Orange Cap race.
