Jitesh Sharma will step up as the captain for Punjab Kings in their final match of Indian Premier League 2024 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. This comes as England’s Sam Curran departs for National duty and regular Skipper Shikhar Dhawan remains sidelined with injury.
While Jitesh himself has not set the stage alight with the bad this season scoring only 155 runs in 13 matches his leadership will be crucial for a team determined to end the season On a High note. With qualification for the play offs a distant dream Jitesh promises a display of fearless cricket from his men.
Jitesh declared at the pre match press Conference that the atmosphere in the locker room is more positive now. We are free from pressure and want to finish strong. Yes the season has been inconsistent but there were plenty of positives. Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma impressed and Harpreet Brar and Simran Singh have been consistent performers. Cricket is a game of small margin and a bit of luck could have changed things for us.”
Jitesh emphasized Punjab Kings renowned brand of fearless cricket. We will play with that same spirit, even more so in the last game. Everyone will be clear headed and focus on winning.
The absence of several English players like Sam Curran, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone and Chris Woakes who left early for personal reasons could be seen as a setback. However Jitesh remains optimistic.
He said we have a strong bench with players who deserve a chance. This is a great opportunity for them and the team to show their talent. The English players’ absence does not dampen our morale.”
Punjab Kings have struggled in the power play overs throughout the season losing wickets early on several occasions nevertheless Jitesh defended his top order facing their intent.
Jitesh explains numbers don’t tell the whole story. The openers have shown the right spirit in every match while they have not always scored big they have always priorities the team needs. Their intent to give us a good start is clear and that is what matters most.”
