India’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin couldn’t believe himself after being drafted into India’s squad for the ICC ODI World Cup. The off-spinner added that life is full of surprises before going on to thank Rohit Sharma and the team management for backing him to be in the World Cup squad.
Ravichandran Ashwin is someone who holds plenty of experience because he has played plenty of cricket across all three formats of the game. The experienced campaigner has always been a regular feature for India in Test cricket. On the other hand, he has been in and out of the set-up in white-ball cricket.
Recently, Axar Patel sustained an injury, which opened a window of opportunity for Ravi Ashwin. Although he hasn’t played plenty of ODI cricket of late, the selectors picked Ashwin purely based on experience. The right-arm off-spinner has played 115 ODIs for India wherein he took 155 wickets at a pretty decent economy of 4.94.
Besides his bowling credentials, he is a handy lower-order batsman. He scored 1 fifty in ODIs and will be looking to make his presence count as a batter when the opportunity arises. Recently, pictures of Ravi Ashwin practising with the bat started doing the rounds on social media.
Rohit Sharma and team management have shown trust in me: Ravichandran Ashwin
During a recent interview, Ravi Ashwin admitted that he was not even considering making it to the World Cup squad four to five months ago. “I would have said that you are joking (If asked about his World Cup chances a few months back). Life is all about surprises, but the captain Rohit Sharma and team management has shown trust in me and backed me to be in the World Cup squad,” Ravichandran Ashwin added.
Meanwhile, India’s two warm-up games against England and the Netherlands were abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain. India will begin their World Cup 2023 journey against Australia on October 8, Sunday at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
