Last year, in late December, talks about Rohit Sharma’s future in the Indian T20 team sparked because of his continued absence from the format. Many experts and veterans were going with each other over who could be the captain in white-ball cricket as the 2024 T20 World Cup is around the corner. Later on, Rohit Sharma raised the discussion with an appearance in the home CDS against Afghanistan in January, before the secretary of BCCI, Jay Shah, confirmed that the 36-year-old is going to lead India in the ICC events in June. However, the veteran India opener’s spot in the World Cup team is questioned in a sensational claim by the former director of Kolkata Knight Riders, Joy Bhattacharjya, who feels that Jasprit Bumrah should lead that team instead of the out-of-form batsman Rohit Sharma.
The selection committee of BCCI, led by Ajit Agarkar, is going to announce the 15-member squad of team India for the T20 World Cup in another week, with my one being the deadline set by the ICC for the announcement of the team. Before this big revelation, the selectors are going to meet Rohit Sharma in New Delhi on Saturday or Sunday on the sidelines of the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League 2024. Rohit Sharma is already in Delhi for the match between the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals on Saturday.
Although the selectors are going to face many problems in picking their final 15 for the World Cup, Bhattacharjya started a fresh debate as he questioned the decision of the BCCI to appoint Rohit Sharma as the captain of the ICC tournament, calling him “Not an ideal choice.”
Joy said, “At this point the decision to appoint Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian cricket team for the T20 World Cup may have hindered the team. Rohit is not the best choice to lead the team in the T20 format.”
Bhattacharjya further lashes doubt at the performance of Rohit in the ongoing season of IPL 2024, saying that while his name will be present in the selection list by virtue of being the captain, India is going to force someone between Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill to bat lower down the order despite them being in better form than Rohit Sharma.
