Indian batter Shubman Gill is widely regarded as one of the sport’s most promising young players. Gill’s development since his ODI debut in 2020 against New Zealand has been unstoppable. Former India captain MS Dhoni and all-rounder Yuvraj Singh were two of the mentors Gill spoke about when he spoke with The Indian Express.
Gill credited both Dhoni and Yuvraj for helping him become the player he is today. Dhoni told Gill to stop worrying about the broader picture and concentrate only on his performance. Gill was encouraged by the wicketkeeper, who said that he should always have faith in his own abilities. Gill’s ODI cap came directly from Dhoni.
Shubamn Gill opened up on how MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh helped him post his underwhelming ODI debut
Upon hearing that Gill had struggled to score well in his first one-day international, Dhoni talked to him. Even though he wasn’t in the lineup, Dhoni consoled Gill by telling him his first performance was superior to his own. For the benefit of the uninitiated, Dhoni’s ODI debut ended with him being run out without scoring a run.

Gill has not played alongside Dhoni very much on the international stage. However, he acknowledges that Dhoni has had a significant impact on his cricket career. Gill’s recent play demonstrates that he has done more than just take the advice given to him; he has put in the effort necessary to improve. Dhoni was renowned as a game-winning player because of his ability to pull India through tough situations.
Not only did Dhoni help Gill, but also Yuvraj Singh. During their time together on the Punjab team, Singh served as Gill’s mentor. Yuvraj suggested that Gill has faith in his own abilities. Singh has been very supportive of Gill’s efforts, and the two have developed a strong friendship.
By making a century in a Twenty20 international against New Zealand earlier this year, Gill joined an exclusive group of players by becoming just the sixth Indian to achieve that feat in all three forms of the game. Previously, only Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli had accomplished this feat.
So far, the opener has seven hundreds (4 ODIs, 2 Tests, and 1 T20I) to his name. He’s also scored two centuries in the IPL 2023.
