Indian commentator Sunil Gavaskar launched a scathing attack on Shreyas Iyer for throwing away his wicket during India’s recently concluded game against the Bangladesh cricket team in Pune. Shreyas Iyer who came out to bat at No.4 started his innings pretty well, scoring 19 runs off 24 balls including 2 fours.
He was expected to finish off the game alongside Virat Kohli in the run-chase but ended up throwing away his wicket in the first ball of the 30th over. He tried to hit Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s delivery for a six but gave the ball straight to Mahmudullah. In the end, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul finished off the game in style.
After the game, Gavaskar felt that Shreyas Iyer should have batted a bit more sensibly. He felt that Iyer lost his patience and that he shouldn’t have played that wreckless shot. He further gave a perfect example by stating that Virat Kohli doesn’t throw his wicket away like that.
“Shreyas Iyer lost his patience. He was batting on 19 and threw his wicket away. Shubman Gill [was batting on] fifty [52], threw his wicket away. Kohli never does that. He will seldom ever throw his wicket away. He makes you earn his wicket and that is exactly what you need. When he got to 70-80, he realised that he has an opportunity to get to a hundred and why not? Hundreds don’t come every day,” Gavaskar pointed out while speaking to Star Sports.
Team India have registered four wins on the trot, beating the likes of Australia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh respectively and are currently placed second on the table. They will take on the New Zealand national cricket team on October 22, Sunday in Dharamshala.
Apart from India, New Zealand also remain unbeaten in the competition. The Black Caps defeated England, the Netherlands, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to register four wins in a row.
