In an emotional backstage sequence, Rey Mysterio hands up his mask to a 38-year-old WWE Superstar.

After this week's SmackDown, WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio swapped masks with Santos Escobar.

In the main event of SmackDown, Rey Mysterio and Santos Escobar engaged in a Fatal 4-Way Match. Madcap Moss and Karrion Kross were also in the contest.

Moss was victorious from the contest, earning a championship fight against Intercontinental Champion Gunther. Santos Escobar and Rey Mysterio, however, were the stars of the show.

WWE fans had been anticipating the two luchadors' encounter on SmackDown, and their in-ring confrontation did not dissapoint.

Escobar approached Rey Mysterio in the locker room after the show and related a tale about his father foretelling the latter's illustrious career.

Escobar cried as he revealed that he had always desired Rey Mysterio's legacy.

The WWE Superstar gave Rey his mask as a token of respect after battling him in the ring, though. He was said to have said:

My dad always told me, "You see him, that's Rey Mysterio," when we saw you. He'll succeed in business. That hit me when I had to be here. I only wanted to inherit your legacy.

I still need a lot. After tonight, I can only appreciate Rey's Lucha philosophy. My dad bred a lion, not a champion. You deserve the highest honor. I respect you, even though I desire your legacy.
