The captain of the Mumbai Indians, Hardik Pandya, paid the price as his team, the Mumbai Indians, were found guilty of breaching the IPL code of conduct. Now Hardik has to pay a fine of Rs 12 lakh because the Mumbai Indians maintained a slow over rate in the Indian Premier League season 2024 match against the Punjab Kings in Mullanpur on Thursday.
In a press release after the match between two teams, BCCI said that Hardik Pandya, who is the captain of the Mumbai Indians, has been fined Rs 12 lakh after his team maintained a slow over rate during the match of the Indian Premier League season 2024 against the Punjab Kings at the PCA new international cricket stadium in Mullanpur on Thursday, April 18.
The press release added that because it was the first overrated offense by Mumbai Indians in the current season, under the IPL code of conduct relating to the minimum overrated offense, Pandya has to pay a fine of Rs 12 lakh.
The Mumbai Indians were going to lose this match because of this slow overrate. In the last two overs of the match, the five-time winners of the IPL title were forced to keep only one for failures outside the inner ring instead of five as they fell short of the given cutoff time.
Captain Hardik Pandya, along with fast bowler Akash Madhwal, bowled with only four boundary riders when the Punjab Kings needed 23 runs in 12 balls. Hardik Pandya bowled really well in the penultimate over, as he gave up only four runs in the first three balls, and then he got the wicket of Harpreet Brar on the fourth ball of his over.
Even after this, the twist and turn of the match didn’t end as the No. 11 player of the Punjab Kings, Kagiso Rabada, hit six on the very first ball of Hardik, which kept the hopes of the Punjab Kings alive.
In the last over of the Punjab innings, they needed 12 runs. Madhwal started the over with a wide ball. After this, even the second ball was wide, but Rabada got the bat to it. This ball went toward the deep point where Nabi was present. He took the ball and threw it straight towards the Stricker end. Ishan Kishan took the ball and bailed off as Rabada couldn’t reach the crease on time.
