In the latest development from the Sri Lankan cricket camp, experienced all-rounder Angelo Matthews has replaced Matheesha Pathirana in the Sri Lanka squad. Matheesha Pathirana picked up a shoulder injury against the Pakistan cricket team in Hyderabad.
As a result, he has been ruled out of the remainder of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 tournament. Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC) decided to bring in the veteran all-rounder, Matthews as a replacement. Earlier, Angelo Matthews joined the Sri Lankan squad in India as a travelling reserve together with Dushmantha Chameera.
For the unversed, both the cricketers were called to Lucknow in case of any injury to the Sri Lankan players. Angelo Matthews holds a truckload of experience under his belt and has played 221 ODIs for his national cricket team wherein he effectively contributed to the team with the bat and ball.

The veteran cricketer scored 5865 runs at a pretty good batting average of 41 including three centuries and 40 fifties to his credit. He registered his personal best score of 139*. On the contrary, he has accounted for 120 dismissals including 2 four-wicket hauls and 1 fifer, registering his career-best bowling figures of 6/20.
“The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has approved Angelo Mathews as a replacement for Matheesha Pathirana in the Sri Lanka squad. Mathews, who has played 221 ODIs, was named as a replacement after Pathirana failed to recover from a shoulder injury sustained during a warm-up match and was subsequently ruled out of the tournament,” read the statement from SLC.
Sri Lanka’s performances in the ongoing edition of the ICC World Cup 2023 have been far from impressive. Having played four games so far, they won just once and lost thrice. Their solitary win came against the Netherlands but lost to South Africa, Pakistan and Australia.
