After an explosive start by the Indian openers in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Tuesday, Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Dunith Velalej is changing the course of the game for his team. Velez first dismissed Shubman Gill, then dismissed big batsmen like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Kohli, who scored a brilliant century in the previous Asia Cup 2023 game against Pakistan at the same venue, tried to play the whip, but the ball got stuck in the pitch and Kohli’s effort went straight to short mid-wicket, where captain Dasun Shanaka was caught. Took an easy catch. The 34-year-old player could score only 3 runs after facing 12 balls.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma got a ball which was almost impossible to play as the ball was staying very low after taking the turn. The Indian captain went on the backfoot, but before he could bring his bat down the ball went under him and hit the stumps. The 20-year-old Velázquez’s statistics currently stand at an extraordinary 3-1-4-3.

Rohit Sharma, who scored a blistering half-century in the high-octane encounter against Pakistan, continued his form against Sri Lanka and scored a half-century in 43 balls. The 36-year-old reached the milestone of 10,000 ODI runs by hitting a six over the bowler’s head off Kasun Rajitha in the seventh over of the innings.
Both Sri Lanka and India are in the best position to reach the final of the tournament as they have not lost a single game so far in the Super 4 stage and have won one each. While Pakistan defeated Bangladesh comfortably, their net run rate declined as they lost to arch-rivals India by 228 runs.
Hence, Babar Azam and co. can’t have any more washouts. On the other hand, the winner of the ongoing India vs. Sri Lanka fixture will reach the final.
