Rashid Khan, a leg-spinner for Afghanistan, is one of the most dangerous spinners in the game. Therefore opponents always take precautions against him. Michael Hussey, the batting coach for the Chennai Super Kings, once provided MS Dhoni with tips on how to play against Khan, but it backfired. Dhoni’s anger towards Hussey continued when he returned to the dugout.
After being banned for two years, CSK’s return to the IPL in 2018 was an emotional one. Qualifier 1 took place at the Wankhede Stadium. After a stellar performance in the league stage, they faced Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Super Kings were chasing a 140-run mark and were down to their last three players at one point.
Dhoni batted fifth and was having trouble in the middle. He got out for 9 (17) as he attempted a cover drive against Khan’s bowling. Dhoni was frustrated with himself for picking that shot. Hussey misjudged Dhoni and felt he wouldn’t utter a word.
Hussey said this on the Lessons Learned with the Greats Podcast, and Dhoni reportedly told him directly that he would bat in his own style going forward. However, in the end, Chennai prevailed by a score of 2 wickets following a hard-fought encounter. Dhoni was frosty with Hussey after the victory and said that he had relied on accurate information from Hussey.
In that year’s final, Chennai defeated Hyderabad to claim the title. In 2023, Hussey is still an essential member of the coaching staff. Khan has completely overpowered Dhoni on the international cricket stage. The former captain of India has scored just 6 (18) runs and has been dismissed once.
Dhoni has scored 24 runs (35 total) with the aid of only two boundaries (strike rate 68.57) in this year’s IPL against him. Dhoni’s wicket has been taken by Khan before. Dhoni has shown a blatant lack of preparation while facing the ace spinner.
