IPL 2023 has been talking boldly about the twilight of one of cricket’s biggest names, MS Dhoni. The man who helped India to three ICC titles under his reign and also establish one of the most enviable records in the antiquity of the game, MS Dhoni bade adieu to international cricket almost three years ago. However, his stint in the IPL has been providing fans at least a chance to see him perform in the biggest stages of all.
India may found captaincy successors for Dhoni in the form of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and now Hardik Pandya. However, CSK is still to find a probable option who can actually change the course of the entire team. If things are not going as per plan, then the Yellow Army thinktank will have to find a way to land a big name in auction in order to fill the boots of MS Dhoni.
Here is what happened to CSK with a different captain
In 2022, Chennai did try to fine an alternative to MS Dhoni through the likes of Ravindra Jadeja but the Indian all-rounder was all over the place as the team started faltering big time and MS Dhoni had to take back the reins. However, that didn’t help CSK any better as after a solitary win, the team completely went into sleep mode.
This year has been different however, as the team has powered their way to the top four and continues to be a real threat to other counterparts despite a shaky bowling unit. In a high-scoring encounter against the Punjab Kings, they went onto lose the game as the latter walked away with the bragging rights in the dying embers of the game.
This is what Wasim Akram had to say about CSK’s captaincy options
However, Chennai’s major worry will be the lack of captaincy as MS Dhoni is still to bring in a young gun or maybe a seasoned campaigner who can take over the reigns and steer the team to glory. Former Pakistani captain, Wasim Akram, had a suggestion for the Yellow Army about the perfect replacement of the CSK skipper.
Talking to Sportskeeda, Wasim Akram said, “CSK had tried Ravindra Jadeja as captain in IPL 2022 and saw that his own performances were getting affected. They had to change the captain. I think they won’t get a better option than Rahane as he can become consistent and is a local player. We have seen that local players are more successful in franchise cricket.”
