West Indies have always been a nation that has produced quality batsmen, all-rounders and fast bowlers. The Caribbean nation dominated the sport for several years, for the most part of the 1990s. In their prime, no team could ever pose a serious threat to them, which clearly tells how they were as a team.
West Indies were well and truly a force to be reckoned with when it comes to Test cricket. They were one of the few teams that were able to figure out a way to come out on top much to the opposition’s annoyance. As the years progressed, several greats called curtains on their careers.
Unfortunately, Cricket West Indies (CWI) failed to find and groom the talents like top nations. However, history will remember West Indies as one of the greatest teams. In this article, we will now go through three batsmen who scored the most runs for the West Indies in international cricket.
1. Brian Lara – 22,358 runs
Brian Lara is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest batsmen of all time. The former West Indies captain has well and truly dictated the terms both in Tests and ODIs. He finished his career as the leading run-scorer for the West Indies cricket team in both Tests and ODIs. Lara scored 11,953 runs in Tests and 10,405 runs in ODIs.
2. Shivnarine Chanderpaul – 20,988 runs
Known for his quirky batting stance, Shivnarine Chanderpaul carved out a reputation for himself as one of the best batters in the history of the sport. He is the second-leading run-scorer for the West Indies in international cricket. He scored 11,867 runs in Tests, 8778 runs in ODIs and 343 runs in T20Is. Notably, he is also the tenth-highest run scorer of all time in international cricket.
3. Chris Gayle – 19,593 runs
Chris Gayle is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most destructive batters to have played Twenty20 cricket. On the other hand, he has been exceptional in ODIs and has been pretty decent in Test cricket. Overall, he scored 7214 runs in Tests, 10,480 runs in ODIs and 1899 runs in T20Is.
